2020 Learn to Row for Adults (Ages 18 and up)
This year, we anticipate two 7 week adult learn-to-row sessions running on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:30pm-8:00pm. Our Spring class will begin towards the end of May. No class will be held on Memorial Day. A second learn-to-row class will be determined based on interest.
The first week of the class will be an introduction to the rowing stroke and terminology. These sessions will provide you with the foundation you will need for your on-the-water experience. We will be using the ergometers (rowing machines), so be prepared with exercise clothes for all sessions.
Following the initial land training sessions, we will begin our on-the-water classes. The first session will teach you the proper methods for handling the rowing shells and oars, acquaint you with the Boathouse, provide you the required safety training, review the components of a rowing shell, and allow you a chance to get into and out of a rowing shell-all in preparation for your first on-the-water experience.
Class participants will be rowing on the Licking River under the supervision of one of our experienced coaches. Classes will be held three days a week, and attendance at all sessions is strongly encouraged. Instruction is incremental, with new techniques added at each session. We will be teaching sculling, with the goal to transition you at the end of the 7 week session to independent rowing in the club's multiple person boats, in either a double or a quad. Don't know what sculling is, or doubles or quads? No problem, this and more are part of the Learn to Row class. You must be able to swim to participate in Learn to Row, but we'll teach you how to row. It is great exercise, a wonderful stress relief, and lots of fun.
After completion of the classes, you will be able to row for the remainder of the calendar year during any of our "Open Row" sessions 2 times per week. This includes use of club boats, some informal coaching and interaction on the water with other experienced rowers. We will be organizing competitive boats for this year's racing season, and participation in a late summer or fall regatta is always a lot of fun for recent Learn to Row graduates.
Registration will be on a first-come, first serve basis, limited to 12 per class. Cost for the Spring 7-week session is $550 (inclusive of membership rights for that year). Cost for the Summer/Fall 7-week session is $400 (again, inclusive of membership rights for that year).
